Of the 69 Nakasendo Stations, Narai is one of the 67 pure Nakasendo Stations (from Itabashi to Moriyama), excluding Kusatsu and Otsu, which are shared with the Tokaido. Whether you count from Itabashi on the Edo side or Moriyama on the Kyoto side, Narai is the 34th post town, located exactly in the middle of the Nakasendo.
Located near Torii Pass, one of the most difficult sections of the Nakasendo, it is known as "Narai Senken" (Narai's 1,000 houses), and is the busiest of the 11 Kiso post towns. The townscape has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government, and the streetscape that stretches for about 1 km along the Narai River still retains a strong resemblance to its past, making it the longest post town in Japan. Another appeal of Narai is that it is not only well preserved, but is still inhabited today.
